Jason Derulo- Wiggle Music Video Analysis

" These Women Need To Wiggle Their Way Back To Equality "

Well, as I was sitting at home scrolling through YouTube and the Wiggle Music Video  popped up, boy was it a surprise to see how these women portray themselves to society. Imagine the power Jason Derulo feels having all those underdressed women in his bed. The song says,“ You know what to do with that big fat butt… WIGGLE WIGGLE WIGGLE.” Do you think those girls listened to him when he told them what to do? Of course they did because the male figure in this video is the patriarchal figure and dominates over the females. At the beginning of the video, Jason is sitting up his bed with about eight different girls passed out laying all over him. The stereotypical  “slutty” women figure is definitely brought to the table in this video. Common Sense media said, “ Parents need to know that “ Wiggle (feat. Snoop Dogg)” is a silly, seductive, and suggestive pop/rap song by Jason Derulo that instructs girls to “wiggle” that big fat butt. Although the song is more playful than sexually aggressive, it still objectifies women and contains graphic innuendos. The music video features plenty of bedroom scenes and lots of shaking booties.” Why do you think women find the need to portray themselves in such an inappropriate manner? I think they have the urge and need to be good enough for certain men and want to feel superior towards men.  As the song says, “If I take pictures while you do your dance, I can make you famous on instagram.” So, only when these women are doing their “dance” meaning wiggling and shaking their butts, that’s the way, they’re going to get famous on social media. What kind of message is that sending out to young teens? Displaying your body in that way will get you noticed? SHAME!! Coming back to the stereotypes shown in this video, we see a couple sluts, a few whores and a ton of low confidence women. An example of the girls in this video portraying themselves in such ways is what they are wearing… if they are even wearing anything at all. Little booty shorts, half ass out and bikini tops; talk about revealing!! These women think that this is how they have to dress to get men’s attention. Notice Snoop Dogg using binoculars to get a closer look at the women’s bottom half? He didn’t even need those seeing as the girls were dancing right up on him half of the video. As I was saying before, body parts that shouldn’t be shown were definitely showing. These women are selling themselves as pleasure figures in this video…The women in this video are thinking,“ Here, stare at me shaking my butt and dancing all around in barely any clothes. Will you like me better that way?” What a great message these girls are sending out to society and teenage girls. Sell yourself short and act like a fool and boys will be all over you…WRONG!!! Respect yourself and act normally and we could get this awful name off our back. Will women ever be the matriarchal figure in anything? Maybe it doesn’t have to be a competition between men and women and maybe it could be equal for once. Jennifer Lopez’s music video I Luh Ya Papi is the total opposite. The man at the beginning of the music video is talking about a location to shoot her next music video and he gives her a few options. The lady beside her says, “ If she was a guy, we wouldn’t be having this conversation at all.” The other woman says, “ No seriously because if she was a dude they would seriously have her up in a mansion with all these half naked girls or maybe even in a yacht.” These women then talk about why men always objectify the women and maybe for once the women should objectify the men. Why does it have to be this way? Why cant there be a video where men and women are both equal? Jason seems to be controlling all these women the whole video. He takes on the subject by the way he’s acting towards the women.  When he says wiggle wiggle wiggle, the women start whistling to his beat and shrugging their shoulders as if he ordered them to do so. In the song it says,” Tired of working that 9 to 5? Oh baby let me come and change your life.” All he’s saying is, are you tired of working an actual professional job? Why don’t you come and dance for me all day long, it’ll be much more fun. The ice sculpture of the girl’s bottom and liquor flowing through the crack with a man at the bottom drinking it… what’s next? Let’s get these women to wiggle their way back to equality.

  1. I strongly agree that this blog on the music video “Wiggle” is against feminism and portraying women’s bodies and their image. This video is highly inappropriate and sending off the wrong images for young girls watching the video. If I was a young girl watching this video I would think, I have to shake my butt to get a guy’s attention and want to be with me? In today’s society girls are using the actions they see on social media as their way to act around people and this video shows many actions that are giving off ideas that will lead them in the wrong path. The example ““If I take pictures while you do your dance, I can make you famous on instagram,” is something that girls will hear and think that they need to post slutty pictures online in order for guys to like them. Many girls and guys are starting to get instagram at young ages now and post lots of pictures of what is going on around them. This video is telling girls to post pictures and videos of them shaking their butts to get “likes” and to be “famous” on instagram. I think that if a mother were to watch this video they would protest it and 100% would not approve of their young girls watching this and the idea of it all.

  2. The music video "Wiggles" is the true definition that women will never have power over men. This video is a shame towards every woman in the world proving that men can control them. I can tell you many young kids around the age 7 and up are listening to this song and singing to the chores "Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle" then start giggling and laughing. Luckily, at that age they don't know what the song means but what if they went home and watched the music video? What if your daughter went home and watched the music? Or your son? Your daughter will start trying to dress and dance like those girls in that music video and your son will start treating girls like a piece of meat. And this is how it all starts, women become an object and the men become a subject. Also, what do you think their parents do when they hear their kid sings these types of songs? They just sit there and laugh or maybe video tape them while they are dancing to the song. Parents should not be encouraging their children to listen to this type of music even though their kids don’t know what the song true message is. I strongly agree with this blog and women should have equal power as the men do.

  5. This video shows no respect for women and is a terrible excuse for music. The artist shows in this video that it is okay to speak to women in such a sexual way with no consequence. There are young kids out there watching these videos and listening to these songs that are taking away the wrong impression from this video. I know from personal experience where at one point in time this was my 7 year old brothers favorite song, a song in which I hope he did not understand because I do understand and it is disgusting. It makes men seem like the superior gender and is against all gender equality missions that feminists have worked for their whole life. This continues to happen in all forms of media and needs to stop before we lose total control. Finally it is a terrible excuse for music but sadly this is what hip hop music has come to nowadays. They make it okay to degrade and put down women and it is sad to see such a long time music tradition end up being the terrible way to express ones feelings just for personal wealth.
